10 years ago Tommy Smith scored the winner v Sheffield United to send Sunderland to the FA Cup semi-finals – the striker’s fourth goal in the Black Cats’ cup campaign. Smith is currently at Cardiff City – his most recent game for the Welsh side was also in the FA Cup, he starred in a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park, knocking the Magpies out of the competition.
On this day in 1998 Niall Quinn made history as the first player to score a hat-trick at the Stadium of Light in a 4-1 victory over Stockport County. The Irishman also has the distinction of scoring the first-ever goal at the SoL in a 3-1 win over Manchester City in August 1997.
